How much does rhodium plating cost in 2026? From white gold rings to silver jewellery — complete cost guide based on current rhodium spot price of $9,050/oz.

How Much Does Rhodium Plating Cost?

Jeweller pricing varies by location, piece complexity, and plating thickness. These ranges reflect typical UK and US market prices as of 2026.

💍 Engagement Ring
$60–$120
Standard white gold or platinum-look ring. Most common jeweller service. Includes cleaning, polishing and 0.1–0.25 micron coating.
💎 Necklace / Pendant
$50–$100
Simple chain or pendant. Lower wear abrasion means plating lasts longer — typically 2–4 years before re-plating needed.
👂 Earrings (Pair)
$40–$80
Minimal surface area and low abrasion. Rhodium plating on earrings is primarily for the bright white finish and hypoallergenic properties.
⌚ Watch Case / Bracelet
$100–$350
Larger surface area and complex geometry increases labour cost. Bracelets experience significant wear — plating may need annual refreshing.
🥄 Silver Cutlery / Flatware
$150–$400+
Per piece or set pricing varies widely. Rhodium on silverware prevents tarnish and reduces polishing requirement. Professional service recommended.
⚙️ Industrial Parts
By quote
Electrical contacts, thermocouple wires, and optical components use thicker plating (1–5 microns). Priced by surface area and thickness spec.
$9,050/oz

Why jeweller prices don't track spot price closely: At $9,050/oz, the rhodium metal in a typical ring coating (0.1 micron on ~5 cm² surface) is worth approximately $0.50–$1.50. The $60–$120 cost is almost entirely labour, equipment, and setup. Rhodium plating costs changed little between $5,000/oz and $25,000/oz spot price.

How Rhodium Plating Works

  1. Deep Cleaning

The piece is cleaned ultrasonically and with steam to remove every trace of oil, grease, and skin residue. Contamination prevents even adhesion.

  2. Polishing & Preparation

All scratches are buffed before plating — the rhodium layer is too thin to hide surface defects. This is the most time-consuming part of the process.

  3. Strike Plating

A thin gold or palladium strike coat is applied first to improve adhesion between the base metal and the rhodium layer.

  4. Rhodium Electroplating

The piece is submerged in a rhodium sulphate or phosphate solution. A precise low-voltage electrical current deposits an even rhodium layer at 0.1–0.5 microns thick.

  5. Rinse, Dry & Inspect

Rinsed in distilled water to avoid mineral deposits, then dried and inspected under light for uniform bright white coverage.

Rhodium Plating Thickness Guide

Plating thickness is measured in microns (µm). Thicker coatings last longer but cost more in solution and time.

ApplicationThicknessTypical Life
Decorative jewellery0.10–0.25 µm1–2 years
Fine jewellery (quality)0.25–0.50 µm2–4 years
White gold rings (wear)0.50–1.00 µm3–5 years
Industrial contacts0.50–3.00 µm5–10 years
Precision optics1.00–5.00 µm10+ years

1 micron (µm) = 0.001 mm. At 0.25 µm on a ring, the actual rhodium used weighs approximately 0.0002 grams.

Why Jewellers Use Rhodium Plating

  • Brilliant white finish — whiter and brighter than white gold, silver, or platinum
  • Scratch resistance — Mohs hardness of ~6 (harder than gold)
  • Tarnish prevention — protects silver and white gold from oxidation
  • Hypoallergenic — barrier against nickel in white gold alloys
  • Chemical resistance — unaffected by most acids, perfumes, and cleaners

Rhodium Plating — FAQs

How much does rhodium plating cost?

Rhodium plating typically costs $50–$120 for standard jewellery pieces such as engagement rings, pendants, and earrings. The cost is driven almost entirely by labour and setup — the rhodium metal in a thin decorative coating is worth less than $2 even at $9,050/oz spot price. Larger or more complex items like watch cases and bracelets cost $100–$350+.

How long does rhodium plating last?

Rhodium plating lasts 1–3 years on jewellery with regular wear. Rings — which experience the most abrasion — may need re-plating every 12–18 months. Pendants and earrings can last 3–4 years. Plating thickness (0.1–1.0 microns) and exposure to chemicals (chlorine, perfume, hand sanitiser) are the main factors affecting lifespan.

Why is white gold rhodium plated?

White gold is yellow gold alloyed with palladium or nickel — the alloy itself has a slight grey or yellowish tint. Rhodium plating gives white gold its bright, mirror-white finish and also adds surface hardness and scratch resistance. Without rhodium plating, white gold looks noticeably more yellow or greyish than platinum.

Can you rhodium plate silver?

Yes — rhodium plating on silver is common for anti-tarnish protection. Silver tarnishes quickly when exposed to air and sulphur compounds. A thin rhodium layer prevents this completely. Sterling silver flatware, picture frames, and jewellery are commonly rhodium-plated for both appearance and durability.

Does the rhodium spot price affect plating costs?

Barely. The rhodium metal used in a jewellery coating weighs approximately 0.0001–0.0005 grams. At $291/gram spot price, that is $0.03–$0.15 in metal value. Even when rhodium was at $29,800/oz ($958/gram) in 2021, the metal cost per ring was under $0.50. Plating costs are driven by labour, equipment, rhodium solution maintenance, and overhead — not spot price.

How do I know if my ring needs re-plating?

Signs your rhodium plating needs renewal: yellowish tinge appearing through the white finish (especially at wear points like the band's underside), reduced brightness or shine, visible scratches in the white coating, or skin irritation returning (if you have a nickel sensitivity). A jeweller can inspect thickness with a plating gauge.
